MG MGA - air filters

I bought a restored Mark 1 a couple of years ago and am a novice mechanically. I want to remove the air filters and give them a good clean and am not too sure of the easiest way to remove the filters with the carbs in situ. Appears that I need to unscrew the two screws underneath the filters but may need to remove the float bowls first? Should I use petrol to clean them?

If you have standard filter cannisters, you can either remove the front bolts to take the top off the filter cannister (not recommended because the tops are a pain to replace in situ). Or, you can remove the entire cannister by loosening the bolts from the back of the carburetor throat. I find that you need to use a stubby wrench with a wide mouth to get a good grip on the rear bolts.

You can clean the filter elements in petrol and re-oil them if you want - that's what the shop manual recommends. Personally, I just use clean felt filter elements without oil, becuase I don't like messing with petrol.

Thanks MD. What does re-oiling mean. Soak or just sparingly brush on perhaps?

Soak and drain-off excess so that the felt is damp.
