MG MGA - air filters
| I bought a restored Mark 1 a couple of years ago and am a novice mechanically. I want to remove the air filters and give them a good clean and am not too sure of the easiest way to remove the filters with the carbs in situ.  Appears that I need to unscrew the two screws underneath the filters but may need to remove the float bowls first?  Should I use petrol to clean them? Thanks Jason  |

| If you have standard filter cannisters, you can either remove the front bolts to take the top off the filter cannister (not recommended because the tops are a pain to replace in situ).  Or, you can remove the entire cannister by loosening the bolts from the back of the carburetor throat.  I find that you need to use a stubby wrench with a wide mouth to get a good grip on the rear bolts.   You can clean the filter elements in petrol and re-oil them if you want - that's what the shop manual recommends. Personally, I just use clean felt filter elements without oil, becuase I don't like messing with petrol. Regards, M.D. '57 Coupe  |
