MG MGA - battery cable gauge size

I have seen listings mentioning one or zero gauge wire for the battery cable but noticed most auto stores have 4 and 6 gauge. What is needed? I plan to replace battery to starter switch, switch to starter and battery to ground. Car is positive ground with one 12 volt battery.

Hi Randy. The original battery cable, though adequate is a electrically bit light. I'm not sure what guage it is, but I replaced my thin original battery cable with thicker, stranded copper wire welding cable. This works great, and cables don't heat up as much when cranking the engine. Of course you need to solder on appropriately sized ends. Hope this helps! Glenn

Don't forget the part of the high current circuit that you didn't mention, the link across the front engine mounting.
This link has to carry the same high current as the cables that you mentioned.
Polish all paint off the areas with which the cable ends come into contact.

I am using size #1. I was lucky, we use this stuff all the time at work. Check out a semi truck repair shop. A lot of them make their own cables. Also I think NAPA will special order them for you.
