MG MGA - Brake Shudder
| When I apply the brakes on my 57 roadster, it shudders until the car comes to a stop. This just started yesterday, but before this problem occured,I was trying to track down a noise that sounded like it was coming from the right rear wheel. The noise increased with wheel speed and stopped when I applied the brakes. I put new brake shoes on last weekend. Before yesterday, the brakes had been working fine. I have new tires on disc wheels, rebuilt M/C, new wheel cylinders etc. Please help if you can! Thanks, Kelly |

| Kelly, You may have a broken brake spring or one that was not properly installed. The noise could be from the spring or shoe rubbing against the drum when there is no pressure on the brakes. The shudder would be from the loose shoe moving under the braking load. I had a similar problem with my 57. One of the little springs that clip the shoe to the backplate broke. The symptoms were alot like you describe. Shudder can also occur if a shoe gets saturated with brake fluid or oil. Bill |
