MG MGA - Hi Gear 5 speed conversion

Hi-Gear offer a variety of gear ratio options in their recon Sierra boxes.
Does any one know what are the benefits of the various options? The prices are very different. Is it a case of the more you pay the better??
Gear Ratios
MGA 3.65, 2.214, 1.374,1.0, -
Standard Ford 3.65, 1.97, 1.37, 1.0, 0.82
Modified Ford 2.98, 1.97, 1.37, 1.0, 0.82
Closer Ratio 3.36, 1.81, 1.26, 1.0, 0.825

It seems to me that the standard sierra box is OK but in all cases second gear is higher than the standard box how does this affect acceleration? The modified Ford box has a higher first gear. It costs £495 against £300 for the standard version. Does the reduced gap between first and second help accelleration ?

I can say 1st gear on my standard Sierra rig gets used up PDQ. After that it feels just right. Vic

I can't comment on the Hi Gear conversion, but I have a 1500 with the MGA C/R box.

With the 4.3 diff, first is pretty high.

The disadvantage of the hight first gear is pulling away from rest is quite slow, but you can drive up to 30 mph without a gear change. I do find that I have to change down to first quite frequently but that's not too bad when I get my double de-clutching right - not a problem with a type 9 though.

It depends what you want to do with the car - I find that driving around in first annoys the local yoof.

I'm surprised that you're not considering the 2.8 sport box: (2.83 1.81 1.26 1.0 0.825) but that's even more money.

I think that the closer ratio box looks best as it raises the ratio for first but keeps the others aboput the same as standard.

Dan- Ilove it! In my neck o'dee we call em "Duncans" ( YO YO YO YO YO). Vic PS in "My cousin Vinney" I remember laughing to Joe Pesces' pretend lawyer character when he told the judge he was finished questioning those "Youts".
