MG MGA - Oil pump removal
Hi, The oilpump on my A in new but performs in a strange way, I suspect cavitation (I use Pennzoil 20/50 oil). This occurs around 4000 rpms it is back up to 65 (when hot). Is it possible to remove the oil pan whitout pulling the engine. The engine is a 18V. Thanks Bex

Bex Section A.19 in the MGA manual says you can withdraw the sump. Doesn't say you need to remove engine from car. Do not know about 18V unit, but the MGA manual mentions that there is a locating tongue on the side of the strainer cover which must be positioned correctly. You must also remember to replace the distance tube. Clean sump and strainer with kerosene and a stiff brush - never use rag. When refitting the sump give particular attention to sealing gaskets for the crankcase face and the two oil seal packings for the crankcase which fit into recesses in the crankcase. Trust this helps, but I wouldn't go there without the correct manual myself. Peter

Bex, make sure you are not over filling the sump. The rods will whip up the oil to a froth and the pump will suck air.
