MG MGA - Polished M/C cover
I just spent the best part of the afternoon polishing the cover of the brake M/C for my 1961 1600. Now that it looks like chrome, is there anything I can do that will keep the shine? I thought about a clear coat of paint, but wasn't sure what other people do with polished aluminum. Any suggestions?

Cleve, What did you use to polish it? Thanks

Hi Cleve. Low tech: couple of coats of car wax. High tech: couple of coats of clear epoxy paint.

Back to the Silicon/ordinary brake fluid saga. Unless you are using silicon fluid don't you run the risk of destroying any coating you put on? Most users of ordinary brake fluid end up with a rusty M/C, presumably due to the effects of the fluid. My M/C got coated with silicon (an accident during bleeding) and still shines like new. Steve

I have been using a product called "Gun Kote", available in several colors, to finish the outside of master cylinders. It is a spray on, then bake on, product that is not affected by brake fluid and most other solvents. I use the black color which may not look as good as polished aluminum, but has held up quite well over the years. Parts need to be bead blasted, throughly cleaned, then sprayed and baked. I use an air brush to apply. Les

Thanks all, I think I will go with the clear coat. I will be refilling with Silicon, so I will not worry about ruining the finish. R.W. I used a combination of things. Started with 1200 grit wet/dry paper. When it was smooth, went to rubbing compond and then to Mother's polish. It looks great! I am going to paint the cast iron part with Castblast, which looks just like cast iron.
