MG MGA - rev counter sender unit

I have a 1500 engine bearing no 15MNH42111 in my MGA. My rev counter is electric however I wish to ask whether the block can be modified to take a mechanical rev counter sender unit. The place where the sender unit normally fits is blocked.
Since I suppose this is not the original engine can anyone give me more details regarding this engine from the engine no.
