MG MGB Technical - Emission test update.....I PASSED !!!

Greetings all,
I just wanted to once again say thanks for everyones
help, and to give you an amazing update.
If you remember I failed the Colorado emission test (rather poorly I might add), back in October. The readings were 6.6 % Co, and 836 ppm HC (more then triple and double the limits respectively). I ended up rebuilding the ZS carb(changing to a grose jet while I was in there), I also cleaned and inspected the choke mechanism and installed a new catalytic converter. The
only other things I did was replace the plugs back to
champion(RY12N) instead of the NKG's I was running.(actually the NKG's did look somewhat fouled with carbon when I took them out). I used my new
gunsons exhaust gas analyzer, while I adjusted the timing and the metering needle to achieve the lowest
CO reading. Fresh oil change as usual. I also took the advice of one of the posters and ran the gas tank down close to empty and then put in a couple of gallons of gas mixed with a high concentration of alcohol.

I took the car in for the emission re-test, and could not believe the new numbers, 0.0% CO, and 4 ppm HC.
Is that really possible?? Now a person would not even be able to kill themselves by closing themselves in a garage with the car running. Your thoughts.

Seems I dropped in just at the right time to hear this good news.

Alcohol is not a hydrocarbon, and leaves only water vapor as an exhaust when burned. Glad to hear you passed. I knew you would.

Don't run it with the garage door shut though...

John, I knew you had it in you all the time. Remember the potion.

John,

Congratulations! How did your car run with these settings on pump fuel after the test?

glad to hear you passed. just a quick comment. I know you were kidding about not being able to kill yourself with 0% CO, but I have had a few customers actually think exactly that when analyzing their car's exhaust readings. Remember, anything that displaces or can't provide oxygen can kill you.
Joaquin

I didn't catch the earlier thread on this.

What sort of alcohol was used?

What was the mix formulation?

Daniel Wong

Yes just joking Joaquin(gee that kind of rhymes), But is it really possible that the exhaust was putting out 0% CO. I wouldn't have imagined it could be possible.
I was wondering if maybe the test stations analyzer could have been out of calibration, I'm not complaining mind you.

Daniel, one of the earlier posts had suggested using as much as a 50/50 mixture of methanol and gasoline. I took someone else's recommendation of adding one bottle of Heet(red bottle)(that is their isopropyl formula),to one gallon of gas. Do this with about one gallon of gas in your tank, so that you can after passing the test, fill the tank to dilute the mixture.

Larry, I had to re-adjust my car after the emission test in order for it to run properly. As a matter of fact I had some rough running just after the test, before I was able to get the mixture diluted well.
