MG MGB Technical - Fitting new exhaust

Simple question - When placing the sealing rings on the manifold flanges on the replacment exhaust 'downpipes' ('67 mgb roadster), is it good advice to place sealing paste also on the upper fibrous faces of the mating surfaces??

Also, any views on 1 piece versus 3 piece systems?

Assuming your referring to the "olives", on my '79 when I converted to SU's I didn't use any paste on the manifold to downpipe connection and have found no leaks after about 4 months. Be sure to use only brass nuts and start them by hand using a socket and extension as you can strip the threads very easy. My system is a 3 piece one and due to each piece being easy to handle was very easy to install.

I have always used sealing paste on every joint of exhaust systems and have never had any leaks.

I used a one piece system, but had to cut off the front section due to bad design/welding where the two downpipes merge to one. I used a standard frontpipe and have had no problems since.

I have seen a number of designs for the front pipe, some are good (like the one in 'The Proper MG') some, they just hammer the two downpipes and jam them into one. I'm no gas-flow expert but reducing the diameter on a the downpipe just before the join can't be good.
