MG MGB Technical - K & N cleaning efficiency
Just a question of curiousity, really. I know that the K & N filter flows air better than the paper filter in the original cans. However, being a foam filter, doesn't it pass larger dirt particles than a paper filter? Thanks in advance. Matt K.

Matt, The K&N is a pleated cloth or cheese cloth ( gauze) material with a wire screen to reinforce it. The cloth media is then saturated (almost) with a oily substance that traps the dirt etc. I have been running them in Ford powerstroke Diesels since 1996 well over 200,000 miles on $4500 engine with no problem. Just pull it off 30,000 miles or so and clean it & re-oil using the kit from K&N. Good product and economical if you keep the vehicle a long time. Bill Jones

Matt, The K & N isn't foam, it is a surgical-type gauze with an oil film, supported by wire mesh. The oil traps particles as small as a paper filter can. A brand new paper filter flows as well as the K & N, but loads up quickly and soon is very restrictive in comparison. When in my motorhead formative stages, racing dirt bikes in high school in the mid/late-70's, K & N's were the hot setup. The filters that came on the bikes were immediately jettisoned. I ran some cross-country races where the rain crashed down all day and the mud was a couple of feet deep in places, but the bike never quit.

Thanks to both of you. Curiousity appeased. Matt K.
