MG MGB Technical - Removal of Steering Column Cowl
I checked the archives and think I have found the answer. I am just hoping the answer is not this difficult. In order to remove the steering column cowl on a 1970 MGB, is it necessary to remove the steering wheel? I removed the two screws on the side, but it still doesn't want to come off. The prompting of this wonderful task was a trip down the freeway tonight. As I was traveling, the headlights decide to turn off. Of course, turning the left indicator turned them back on. With the highbeams selected, they would work with the right indicator (sometimes). Although, the highbeams don't work at all. Oh, what fun. Jason 1970 mgb roadster

Jason. There should be four screws in the cowl unless the two side screws near the dash have been left out. The two long screws are removed from the left side of the cowl. The ones near the dash are short and the dash is in the way so it requires a short screwdriver. I usually lower the column a little by backing off the three 3/8" bolts holding the column in place, they are on the bottom side of the column just behind the dash. Don't remove them just back them about 1/2". You should be able to get the cowl off without removing the stering wheel buy following this proceedure. It takes a little jiggling around to remove but it usually works for me. However, it is much easier with the wheel off. Hope this helps, Clifton

In addition I use a three legged puller to remove the steering wheel. The puller was cheap (£5 I think) from my local tool shop. It's a handy thing to have around.
