MG MGB Technical - Reply for Paul Hunt re Ignition Warning Lamp
Paul, I followed up on your suggestions regarding my ignition warning light. With a jumper connecting the brown and yellow alternator lead to ground (with the connector unplugged from the alternator), the light did light up. So the bulb is OK. Now, however, the light would not go off, even with the key out of the ignition and in the off position, with the jumper disconnected. I disconnected the battery via the cut off, then reconnected, and the light stayed on. It also would not go off with the car running. But, the battery read 12.7 volts with engine off, 14.2 running, even at idle, so the car is charging. Then, on a hunch, I plugged the alternator connector into the alternator in reverse of prior connection. This apparently can be done on this alternator, but could not have been done with my prior one. Now the ignition light goes on briefly as the car is being shut off, as you would expect, but still does not come on as car is being started. As before, alternator is charging, with the same results. Also, the car, when running, will stay running with the battery disconnected (only did this briefly so as not to harm anything). Circuit tester shows alternator charging in all cases, although with headlights and radio on it is marginal; with high beams on it barely keeps up. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. This is a newly rebuilt alternator and a new battery(last Fall for both). Many thanks for your help! Ira |
