MG MGB Technical - What else needed with K&N filters?
I want to order K&N filters for the B. Part#SD23-319 has been suggested. Is one pair of these filters all I need or, do I need to order additional parts? Stub-stack were mentioned on aptfast.com. What are they?

K&N stub stacks are made of cast aluminum (?), look like very, very short ram pipes (hence the name), and bolt up to the front of the carbs. They smooth the air flow into the mouth of the carbs. If you have the original MGB air filter canisters (for SU HS-4s), then the back plates perform the same function, and are much more elegant looking. Regards, Jerry

To further elaborate - there are at least two common types of K&N applications - one is the aftermarket filter choices (pancake filters, and some deeper designs, too) the other is a straightforward replacement filter for within the OEM canister. (As I am not familiar with K&N part numbers, I don't what you've got). As Jerry says, the OEM canister, with the existing backing plates, do not need the addition of stub stacks, and, in my experience, do not need re-jetting either. The other, non-OEM style filters, would need the stub stacks for airflow and would likely need richer needles due to the increased airflow.

there is another consideration with K&N filters. If the installation will interfere with the brake servo, you should order the conical K&N filters. rn

Dana, You've got to look at http://www.hotelling.com/mgb7.htm for what in my opinion is the best solution. The Filterchargers are about £25 each and you can get a list of UK suppliers from K&N's website. Chris

Wow! Great site Chris. Thank you.

Dana... no, thank YOU... for the compliment on the site. If you're going to do this, let me know of any details I should add to the site to make it easier! Roger

Nobody mentioned this but you should also consider getting the K&N Recharger Kit along with the aircleaners. Comes with a bottle of cleaner and red oil.
