MG TD TF 1500 - Carburetor Substitution

I'm restoring a 1953 TD Mk2. I noticed that my engine has 1 1/4 inch carbs, while it should, for a Mark 2, have 1 1/2 carbs. On the other hand, the engine #(XPAG 4366) doesn't match the chassis #(TDC21548), so I think that it is really a MK1 engine in a Mk2 car.I know that the car is a true Mk2, since it has the Adrex shocks, the Mk2 bump in the front tub for the shocks, two SU carbs, etc. So, in keeping with the Mk2 restoration, and desiring more power, but not wanting to change engines, I'd like to put 1 1/2 inch carbs on the engine.

Yesterday I went to the Carlisle, PA import flea market and bought a beautiful set of rebuilt MGA carbs, #AUC784. Will they work on the XPAG engine?

Hi Ira,
They may want a bit of juggling as they would be set up for the opposite side of the engine. You will also need a 1-1/2 inch inlet manifold. A TF manifold should be as close as you can get. I am unsure whether there is any difference between a TDc manifold and a TF manifold. Someone else may be able to answer this.

Cheers,

Paul.

Yes they will work, you will need to plug a hole for the fast idle bell crank, where you will remove the bolt that holds it in place.the tap threads for it in the other carb. [whithorh-b.s]You may have to purchase a link of a different length for proper adjustment. Use your original intake manifold, Just grind it out, & polish. The carb bodies are longer>less room for air filters, do not use the oirginal 1 1/4 inch air box & filter, [too much restriction].When you purchase air filters, ask if they will fit a TD w/ MGA carbs. MGA Carbs are slightly longer than the TD MkII, TF carbs I have been told (not sure this is correct). In any case the MGA air filters will not work (Not enough room, they interfere with the hood side panel) The TF air filters are thinner and canted to be parallel with the side panel so they will just fit.
You can by the correct linkage parts from Moss or Abingdon Spares.
The cam in you XPAG may not be the one used in the later TD, TD MK II, and TF, and the head may not have the bigger valves

MGA carbs will work. The MKII carbs have shorter bodies. MGA carbs will fit under the bonnet with TF cleaners. The rear carb will fit with an MGA cleaner. I have a set of thin chromed pancake style cleaners on my standard TD with a stage II engine, MGA carbs, and TF intake manifold. Try the GJ or GS carb needle. The TF manifold has a larger inside bore.
