MG TD TF 1500 - Gearbox teeth missing need parts
It was a beautiful Saturday afternoon with the top down when the Lay gear decided to lose some teeth from my TF. After taking the box apart I found some other problems and was wondering if anyone has any parts or info. 1: Lay (cluster) gear, I will probably buy this new. 2: The brass ring for third gear synchro is worn and loose, does anyone know of a way of replacing just this piece from the sliding hub, with enough reliance to know I will not have to take apart the box again in a couple thousand miles, Or a good used one, but will probably buy new. 3: A good used striking dog, for the third and fourth gears. 4: A good used fork for the third and fourth gears (the one hanging down from the selector shaft attached to the striking dog). Thank you, Ben. |

Ben, I think you are talking mega$ to repair your box. Have you considered fitting a five speed Ford box and waiting until a good T series one turns up Jan T |

Ben, Jan is right. You are talking about enough money to buy another car. Complete second-hand gearboxes are much cheaper, and will give you plenty of other spares too. I bought a very good TD gearbox as a spare for 250, complete with remote and bell housing. I also bought a seized 'TD box for 75, which turned out to have only slight corrosion damage and worn needle rollers, most of the major internals are usable, including all the bits you mentioned. I noted half a dozen TD and YB 'boxes for sale at the mg spares day in February at Stoneleigh, so there are plenty out there. Definitely the way to go. AB |

I have a spare cluster gear that came with my TD. It has no chips on the teeth, but I have to admit that I have never opened up my gearbox so I don't know what they are supposed to look like. If you are interested, e-mail me off line and I will send pictures etc.. and then we can talk about price. Cheers, Rob |

I want to thank everyone who answered. Found a gentleman in Canada who will replace the synchro's for USD50. NOS parts just appeared on e-bay. (no one else is allowed to bid on them :) :) :)) probably purchase the (expensive) cluster gear new. Dont feel like taking apart the 'box again if the used one is not perfect. Here is to being on the road again. |
